Colonel Greg Six has dedicated more than 30 years to public service and law enforcement, building a distinguished career marked by leadership, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the Hanover County community. After serving in emergency communications and honorably serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, he joined the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in 1998 and quickly earned a reputation for excellence in patrol operations, DUI enforcement, and crisis response. Throughout his career, he has served in numerous specialized and leadership assignments, including SWAT, Traffic Safety, Training, Finance, and Administration, while mentoring deputies and helping guide the agency through critical incidents and major initiatives. Widely respected for his integrity, experience, and servant leadership, Colonel Six rose through the ranks to become Undersheriff in 2025 before being sworn in as Interim Sheriff of Hanover County in March 2026 and officially assuming the Office of Sheriff on April 1, 2026. A graduate of Liberty University and several prestigious leadership programs, he remains deeply involved in the community and proudly resides in Doswell with his wife, Amanda, and their three children.

Colonel Greg Six began his career with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office in December 1998. Prior to that, he served for two years as a Communications Officer with Hanover County Public Safety Emergency Communications and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a Fire Direction Controlman with Hotel Battery, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines in Richmond, Virginia.
Colonel Six spent the first 15 years of his law enforcement career in the Uniform Patrol Division, where he was a founding member of the Sheriff’s Office Safe Streets Unit and became a statistical leader in DUI enforcement. He was twice recognized by the Virginia Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his excellence in DUI detection and enforcement and has been qualified as an expert witness in DUI enforcement in federal court. During his patrol career, he was among the first responders to the 2002 sniper incident in the Town of Ashland and participated in the successful 2011 search for a missing autistic child, Robbie Wood.
Throughout his career, Colonel Six has served in a variety of specialized assignments, including the SWAT Team, Traffic Safety Unit, Motor Carrier Inspection Team, and Mobile Command Center Team. He also served for approximately 10 years as the lead DUI and driving instructor in the Criminal Justice Academy and has instructed both the Citizens Police Academy and Youth Citizens Police Academy. In addition, he has conducted background investigations for prospective employees and mentored new deputies.
Colonel Six has received numerous commendations, including seven Officer of the Month awards, two Meritorious Service awards, two Dedication to Duty awards, an Excellent Service award, and multiple Unit Citation and Safe Driving awards.
In 2013, Colonel Six was appointed as the Sheriff’s Office Finance Officer, where he managed all fiscal operations, including budget development, grant administration, procurement, and asset management. He later rose to the rank of Lieutenant in 2017 while continuing to oversee financial operations. In 2020, he was appointed Captain of the Administrative Division, where he supervised Budget and Finance, Human Resources, Training, Information Technology, Evidence, and Fleet operations, while managing a multi-million-dollar annual budget and long-term capital planning initiatives.
In 2024, Colonel Six returned to the Uniform Patrol Division as a Captain, where he commanded a 69-member platoon and served as Incident Commander during critical incidents and emergency events. In June 2025, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel and served as Undersheriff, acting as chief advisor to Colonel Hines and overseeing the majority of agency operations, including both Patrol and Administrative Divisions.
On March 16, 2026, Colonel Six was sworn in as Interim Sheriff following the retirement
announcement of Sheriff David R. Hines. On April 1, 2026, he officially assumed the Office of Sheriff of Hanover County.
Colonel Six is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School in Ashland and holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Liberty University, graduating cum laude. He also earned a graduate certificate from the National Criminal Justice Command College at the University of Virginia. His professional development includes the Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS) at the University of Richmond, the Institute for Leadership in Changing Times (ILCT), and Performance Management through the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville.
He is an active member of the community, including the Hatcher-Cole Fraternal Order of Police, the Mechanicsville Businessman’s Association, and Masonic lodges Ashland #168 and Temple #9. Additionally, Colonel Six is deeply committed to supporting his children and their success. He’s coached youth softball, worked numerous swim meets in certified roles and has attended many field trips throughout the years as a chaperone developing strong relationships and opportunities to be a role model to the youth of Hanover County. As part of his public service journey, Colonel Six was a volunteer with Hanover County Fire-EMS in the mid to late 1990’s.
The Six family is rooted in the Christian faith and thankful for the church communities and pastors of Winns Baptist Church, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and Compass Christian Church for supporting our family throughout the years. Colonel Six resides in Doswell with his wife, Amanda, and their three children, Addison, Hanna, and Collins.
